October 26, 2021—We launched “Spikeys, Prickles & Prongies: A Coronavirus Discovery Story” during the Philippine Readers & Writers Festival this month! What a fun and unique send off for the book we’ve been working on for almost a year.
I’ve missed getting together with writer and illustrator friends in Manila. But the live, online event organized by National Book Store—the big book store I grew up with—had to do. It was unique to pandemic; We got together online to keep everyone safe and still had fun.
I talked about my work as a science writer in the US and how I managed to research and write the book during the pandemic. Illustrator Jamie Bauza shared her inspiration for the book’s visual characters and world. It was great to finally meet her online! Meg Roxas, Tahanan Books marketing lead, read parts of the book and hosted the Q&A.
As we talked, the event was streamed live on National Book Store’s social media page. Because Jamie, Meg, and I were in Zoom, I couldn’t see all the greetings from my friends in the streaming page. You can view the recording here.
Sometimes I still can’t believe we’re living through a time like this. I would have happily flown to Manila to send this book off to the world. But I did it from a study next to my bedroom. It was amazing that we could get together from our homes all over the world. But I also hope we can ease back to spending time together soon.
